After our 5 night stay in London, we opted to return to the Mediterranean Coast where we spent 1 day on a cruise exploring the town of Nice and said someday we would return. That day finally came, and after 2 flights from LCY-FRA-NCE, we arrived in Nice, France to perfect summer beach weather for 4 days. Our 3 nights would be spent at Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Mediterranee for 48,000 points, or pay $2503.61. Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Mediterranee

Many people have had questions about the bus from NCE (Nice) airport to Hyatt. From what I read online, some said this was easy and others said the bus didn’t stop by the Hyatt. So after I read One Mile At A Time’s 50Euro cab ride for 3 miles from the airport to Hyatt, I would figure out the bus route once we arrived. The staff working the tourist booth and bus stop were helpful. I looked over the map and determined that Bus 99 is what we needed to take. Once you walk out of Terminal 1 (the door on the left), you proceed to the door on the right in this picture:NCE Bus - Nice Busthen directly in front of the ticket booth is where you stand to wait for Bus 99 here. The fare was 6Euro each (much cheaper than the 50Euro cab ride!), and you take this all the way until you reach the Congres Promenade stop (about 15-20min) Here is a picture of the exit:NCE Airport Bus to Hyatt StopOnce you exit the bus, the Hyatt Nice is directly across the street – a stately structure that is somewhat awe-inspiring when you first look at it in the Med sunlight:Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la MediterraneeOnce quickly checked in, we proceeded to our King room on the upper floor, which was very spacious with a large balcony that overlooked the pool below and a tiny view of the ocean through the pillars. When we arrived we turned on the TV but the volume would not go below “10”. I did all I knew when the TV menu to correct, so we called maintenance to figure out what the issue was. This took about 24hrs and 3 maintenance staff to finally get corrected. The engineer had apparently seen this issue before and knew to bring a USB that apparently “resets” the TV settings. First I had seen this before. But the problem was finally corrected so our neighbors didn’t hear our TV through the walls.

Another issue we complained about, but was never fully corrected, was the very dirty walk-in shower with mold all over the walls. This was your typical mold that wasn’t wiped down in the last few days, this was mold that was caked onto the shower walls for weeks, if not months, that the cleaning crew did not address. Very gross. Here are some pictures of the black mold on the walls:Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Mediterranee Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Mediterranee Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la MediterraneeWe took part in the hotel’s beach area for 50Euro per day. YES, this is a ridiculous price. But apparently that is the going rate in this area as we check several other companies up and down the boardwalk. This does include come-and-go all day long, which is nice. And waiter service is provided at your chairs, which is nice. But $75USD is $75USD – that is the most I’ve ever paid for beach chairs. The only benefit was I would be getting bonus points for hotel charges :|. Note – bring your water shoes when in Nice because the beach is nothing but large rounded rocks to walk on. The beach club provides this walkway, but shoes are still necessary when walking around. There were many who braved going into the water without shoes, but it is tuff to walk on. Especially for children.

Overall, we had a great stay at the Hyatt Nice. The location is very close to Old Town, where we ate lunch and dinner each day. We’re not big breakfast people, and would rather have pizza than eggs, so we had some cheap croissants around the corner from the hotel from several small shops, and then waited until 1130A/12P when places opened for lunch to eat. Old Town is maybe a 5min walk. Very easy.

We would certainly stay here again on a return to Nice. We only stayed 2 full days for the beach, but if we stayed longer we would have purchased some cheap beach chairs that you can get for about 20Euro from the shops around the hotel. For our 5 night stay in London, we chose the Waldorf Hilton London for 240,000 Hilton HHonors points versus paying $3145. An easy decision, thanks to CVS previously allowing credit card purchases for Vanilla Reload cards and the AmEx Hilton previously giving bonus points for drugstore purchases…A win-win for everyone! 🙂Waldorf Hilton LondonWe arrived a bit early, before noon, and we were instructed to relax in the Executive Lounge while we waited for our room to be cleaned. The Waldorf Hilton Executive Lounge provided nice breakfast, tea service and evening canapes and alcohol. Throughout the day the lounge was open (with your key) for bottled water, bottled soft drinks, coffee and tea. Always helpful when staying in Europe to save a little money on drinks, especially in expensive London where a bottled water averages $3-$5 USD. While we certainly saved money eating breakfast in the lounge each day, the offerings were the same every day. Would like to see the staff change up breakfast with some rotating items so people staying for a week don’t have to eat the same food for 5 mornings.

Our room was ready about an hour after arriving and what a very nice and spacious room we were given! This was a Waldorf Hilton King Executive Room. VERY NICE! I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves, but the highlights for me were the large space to move around for a week, the 110V plugs at the workdesk and 2 closets so I didn’t have to share. There was also nightly turndown service and were given this welcome amenity to start off our stay here – a very nice touchWaldorf Hilton London welcome amenityHere are the room pictures…IMG_2365 IMG_2362 IMG_2363 IMG_2364 Waldorf Hilton London King Executive Room #1 IMG_2367 IMG_2368Here are some pictures of expensive London…London pictureIMG_2306IMG_2357IMG_2345IMG_2332IMG_2291IMG_2279IMG_2275IMG_2272IMG_2199IMG_2193We booked The Big Bus for a 2-day Hop-On-Hop-Off of London. We paid approx $75 USD each. The route goes all around London and includes a walking tour and boat trip. There are several other companies offering the same, but those companies had pushy sales people while The Big Bus representative was more laid back, offering answers to any questions we had and wasn’t rude or putting down the other companies. So we went with the more positive sales rep and enjoyed our tour of London. They also offer free panchos when raining, ear plugs, and either a live tour guide or recorded tour guide with 8 different languages. We enjoyed the recorded one better.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in London and at the Waldorf Hilton London. We plan to stay at this centrally located hotel again upon our return next time.

With booking business/first class during business summer months, especially using BA Companion Certificate for redemption, I’ve learned you’ve got to book this type of trip out at least 9-12 months. For me it was about 12 months to make sure I got the dates I needed.

We booked British Airways Club World (business) seats roundtrip from/to DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) to FRA (Frankfurt). Here is a screenshot of the retail price ($17464.04) for these segments: BA - DFW to FRAWe were excited to return to the British Airways 747 configuration with business class seats on the upper deck. While the seats are not as big BA First Class, or service as attentive, nothing I’ve ever flown compares to the “private plane” style of flying like BA’s upper deck does in business on their 747’s. We do truly love the quietness of the upper deck away from everyone else. And I do enjoy BA’s business class seats compared to United and other domestic carriers – much more private.BA Business Class 747

I opted for the Flounder, which was pretty good:BA192 Club WorldOther than the flight attendant keeping the lights on ALL flight so no one could get some sleep, and the service spotty given there are only 20 of us to server, the flight was fairly uneventful.
